Blackboard’s “Embed Media” button in the (extended) formatting menu allows you to add iframes without knowing anything about HTML, but I show in the video how (if you’re willing to look at the raw HTML) you can make changes to the iframe attributes, such as making the width of the frame a percentage of total page width instead of fixed, that the Blackboard interface itself does not support. Iframes are just HTML’s way of embedding one page within another. While I demonstrate embedding the activity in a Blackboard page, this can be done in any page that supports iframes. But you’ll need your own account to save graphs on the site. You can even share graphs without being logged in. You can also include basic Desmos graphs without creating an activity, and you can even do this without an account if you are sharing a graph you found online instead of your own. They can even submit work to your class without an account. They would only need an account if they want to be able access their own previous work after leaving and returning. Do I Need an Account? Do My Students?Īs an instructor, you will want to have a Desmos account to manage collections of helpful activities, create links for your students to access them, and create your own activities if you like but students do not need to have their own accounts to access the demonstrations. However, you can build simple activities without scripting, just by relying on the power of the underlying graph.ĭesmos Activities are quite intuitive and natural to build, but it is worth exploring a few different activities to get a sense for the design philosophy before making your own - in short, you probably don’t want too much going on in a single screen, and think about building your activity as a sequence of screens. The scripting is natural enough, and the documentation is good enough, that (I believe) one does not really need programming experience to use it. This allows, for example, a student to enter a function in one component, have a second component graph that function, and a third component display interesting results from the graph. Components can talk to each other through a simple and straightforward scripting layer which fortunately is well-documented. ![]() An Activity is a sequence of screens, with each screen consisting of a small collection of components (such as graphs, notes for message to the students, input boxes, multiple-choice inputs, etc). ![]() ![]() Kessil held out forever and when it comes to a head-to-head match-up with the AI Prime 16 HD, the Kessil A80 fails the new standards. However, that began to change as companies introduced smart features and controls into their lighting systems. Normally, that wouldn’t be an issue, as a most aquarium LED lights have always been manually controlled and nothing else was ever needed. One of Kessil’s biggest issues, that it didn’t solve until the inception of the 360W, is the lack of smart technology. The Kessil A80 seems to put out an equivalent amount of light when the two are stacked, side by side, however, the results just aren’t the same. AI stands for Aqua Illumination and it matches its name very well as far as that is concerned. Every time these two have a competition with each other, the AI Prime just seems to shine a little bit more. ![]() That’s not to say that Kessil is useless here. The AI Prime HD 16 has received a lot of love and it certainly shows with consumer and professional reviews. In fact, the Prime often shows better coral growth over the Kessil 160. In a head-to-head match-up, the AI Prime shows more growth and color variations as the months roll on than the Kessil A80. Placed in the same situation, with a similar size tank and a comparable amount of coral, does one outperform the other? When you are trying to find a good comparison between the Kessil A80 and the AI Prime 16 HD, it all boils down to the overall coral growth that you’re getting from each of them. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is composed of 409 individual circles in a spiral pattern. "If you really have ESP, you should be able to get it right maybe 65%, 80% of the time," Rouder said. This type of result is consistent across parapsychological research, said Jeffrey Rouder, a cognitive psychologist at the University of California, Irvine. And they did - but only by a small margin: They selected the window hiding pornography 53% of the time, to be exact. Bem hypothesized that if ESP were real, participants would pick that window more than half of the time. ![]() Behind one window was a screen showing pornography. For example, one of Bem's studies asked participants to select one of two windows, both of which were hidden behind curtains. In addition, skeptics point out that results that appear to provide evidence for ESP aren't actually much different from what you'd expect based on chance. "They can't do it when the conditions are tight." "Scientists can't do it again," Alcock said. No one seems to be able to repeat the exact same experiment and get identical results. For example, one set of experiments might find that ganzfeld experiments work with photographs, and another study might add videos and find that the participants guess the videos correctly but not the photographs. But if you look closely at these studies, you'll find slight differences in both the methods and the results. Sometimes, it may seem as if certain results - such as those from ganzfeld experiments - can be replicated, Alcock told Live Science. "In science, if you discover something and claim it as a fact, then other scientists following similar procedures should find the same thing," said James Alcock, a professor of psychology at York University in Toronto. There's a major problem with ESP research: You can't replicate it. Bem has since received widespread criticism for using study methods known to encourage false positive results. In other words, it appeared that precognition helped participants "remember" words based on their future practice. Participants remembered more of the words they would later practice than those they didn't. Later, he would give them a subset of those words to "practice" by copying them out. He conducted nine standard psychological experiments, with well-established psychological effects - but did them in reverse.įor example, he would show participants a long list of words, and would have them memorize as many as possible and then repeat what they remembered. In 2011, he published a paper in The Journal of Personality and Social Psychology that appeared to demonstrate evidence for precognition, or the ability to predict the future. One of the best-known and most controversial figures in ESP research today is Daryl Bem, a professor of psychology at Cornell University. If they selected the target image, it was considered a "hit." Similar to the results of Rhine's earlier research, a review article aggregating the results of dozens of these studies found that people consistently selected the target more often than one would expect based on chance. Afterward, the study participants would view a set of images, one of which was the target. The researchers would ask participants to focus on whatever images floated into their minds while a "sender," sitting in another room, viewed a "target" video clip or image and attempted to transmit the information to the participant. ![]() The goal was to deprive the participants of sensory stimuli, making it easier to focus on ESP messages. In the 1970s, researchers began conducting ganzfeld experiments, in which participants would sit in darkened rooms with their eyes covered, listening to white noise. Many of these studies appear to provide evidence for the existence of ESP. Today, ESP research appears alongside orthodox psychology research in high-profile, peer-reviewed journals, including American Psychologist and the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. The program, later nicknamed " Stargate," was devoted to ESP applications in the Cold War. ![]() This research hasn't just taken place on the fringes between 19, the CIA and Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA), spent $20 million on ESP-related research efforts conducted largely at Stanford Research Institute, according to a 2015 article published in the journal SAGE Open. How to enable Do Not Disturb on your desktop If someone has an urgent message for you, they can bypass Do Not Disturb and reach you via direct messages. Other teammates in your workspace can see when you have Do Not Disturb enabled. But don’t worry, you can still view any missed messages afterwards. Here’s what happens when you enable Do Not Disturb (DND) on Slack: In this article, we’ll teach you how to manage your Slack notifications and get some much-needed Focus Time - no matter what operating system you use. The good news is that most apps, including our favorite messaging platform Slack, let you pause notifications via Do Not Disturb mode. For example, if you look at a teammate’s status and see that they’ll be out of the office for a week, you might not add them to a new project so that they don’t feel too busy when they get back.Did you know that it takes an average of 23 minutes (and 15 seconds) to recover from a distraction at work? Since Slack is a messaging app, it can be tempting to respond quickly to messages from coworkers after work or when you’re on vacation. Work-life balance is when an employee feels like they can handle the demands of their job and their personal life without getting too stressed out or burning out. “Please talk to John if you have any urgent questions or updates about project X.” This helps people talk to each other and lets everyone know how and when their projects will move forward. You shouldn’t feel bad about leaving your desk to get lunch or blocking off an afternoon to work on something important.
